Mafia in Ghana Music Industry - Doomsday predicted

I Predict Doom For Hiplife Music In The Next Ten Years Says Fredyma

If experience is the best tutor in life, then there is no one better to teach the Ghanaians about making good songs and staying long in the Ghanaian music industry than Fred Kyei Mensah of Fredyma Studios.

His thoughts about the music industry is that the “music industry is now a ‘mafia’ one. It’s a who you know system now’. DJ’s also sabotage some artistes and producers”.

Purchasing of albums are now low because people can listen to them on radio thus musicians are dying gradually at the expertise of radio. Now the hiplife span is only two months”.

“MUSIGA should have premolars and canines to be able to solve these problems in the hiplife industry other than that I predict doom for Ghana music in the next ten years”, Fredyma said.

Even before training sound engineers and making hits, the Adabraka-based sound engineer cum musician started operating the studio in his bedroom. He branched into music 15th January, 1996 after resigning from Shell as the Shell Branch Manager.

Fredyma has had success by training sound engineers like Appietus, Jay Q, Sammy of PSI and seven other Liberians, as well as a host of other artistes like Ofori Amponsah, Kofi B, Daasebre Dwamena, She, Suzzy & Matt. He can brag that about 80 percent of Ghanaian musicians have passed through his camp.

The sound engineer mogul has been a member of MUSIGA and Sound Engineers Association. He has not received any award yet but has been recognized on TV, newspapers and radio.

His Studio is the only one which has live recordings of the late Kiki Gyan’s works (has plans of launching it with Kojo Antwi). He also recorded Charles Taylor’s campaign in 1997.He also did all Electoral Commission songs for last years elections and has also done NPP and NDC campaign songs emerging in the early 1990s.

Fredyma was born on the 18th October, 1964 and is married with 2 boys. His eldest son plays the keyboard more than him. His grandfather was a trumpeter and his mother was a member of the local church in his hometown – Agogo in Ashanti Region.

He had a science background at Prempeh College and was part of his school choir, and also knew how to play the keyboard well. He developed interest in music because he was good at playing the keyboard.

A lot of TV jingles like Palace biscuits, Poly tank, Goil, and also video clips have all passed through his studio.

With a steady string of hits songs, Fredyma wants musicians to come to his studio because he has experience and his outputs on songs are good.

Why people should come to his studio is that he is the primus, don dada in the music industry and has played a major role in terms of sound quality.

“Live band should have been the best for Ghanaian music industry but it is very expensive to play live”, he said.

Fredyma is set to create another masterpiece, one that is destined to rule the charts as he is currently recording Paapa Nyanka, Celestine and Ataa Ne Ataa (children of S. K. Oppong, highlife singers).

He intends to rejuvenate all the highlife songs of King Onyina, A. A. A., Black Chinese, C. K. Mann and more to make him a top-tier record maker.

With the phenomenal works under his sleeves, he has decided to venture in film production and directing of documentaries.

There is no denying that Fredyma has established himself as one of Ghana’s best sound engineers, musician and producers.
