Asamoah Gyan Retires From Black Stars 2/19/2012

Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan has announced his retirement from the Black Stars of Ghana.

The Al Ain star sent a letter to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) late on Friday night informing them of his decision, which had the "full support of family and friends".

The 26 year old striker says he is frustrated over the verbal abuse he has received since playing for the country at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.
As part of his reasons, Gyan who has scored 28 goals in 59 games for Ghana, cited the "intolerable" abuse he suffered after the Black Stars were kicked out of the tournament.

The 26-year-old netted on his debut against Somalia some nine years ago.

Gyan became public enemy No.1 after missing a crucial penalty in Ghana''s 1-0 semi-final defeat to Zambia, with many Ghanaian football lovers accusing him for Ghana’s defeat in the competition.

The penalty he missed was similar to one that he missed at the 2010 World Cup quarter-final against Uruguay, where Ghana was knocked out.

The striker said that it was "an incredible honour" to represent his country having made his debut as a 17-year-old in 2003.

Meanwhile, the GFA has confirmed receipt of the letter from Asamoah Gyan announcing his decision to take a temporary break from the Black Stars.

The GFA, however, says they are in talks with Mr. Gyan to urge him to reconsider his decision.
