Sports Minister optimistic of a successful National Unity Games 7/17/2011

With just two days to the revived and newly christened National Unity Games, the Ministry of Youth and Sports and its stakeholders are working round the clock to ensure a smooth take off of the games.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Thursday’s Sports Night program on Multi TV, the Minister for Youth and Sports, Clement Kofi Humado indicated that preparations are at the zenith for the games.

He however noted that there have been challenges in securing infrastructure and equipment for the games.

But said “we had a budget for equipment and the equipment that we have bought so far would be sufficient to hold the games”.

Commenting on the benefits the nation will derive from hosting the games, the Sports Minister expressed optimism that talents which would be discovered during the games would form the nucleus of the various national sports teams to represent the nation.

He added that hosting the National Unity Games at this time of the year will also enable “all the talents to feed directly into the All Africa Games in Maputo in September and the London 2012 Olympic Games”.

Even though some sponsors have donated towards the Unity Games, the Minister indicated that they were insufficient, and has therefore "appealed to the regional coordinating councils of the various district assemblies to also help”.

The National Unity Games has over the past seven years suffered a series of setbacks. Even though the Sports Minister admitted that some challenges still persist, he said “we are not daunted, we’ll go ahead. We believe that it will be a successful event”.

The opening ceremony for the 2011 National Unity Games is slated for Sunday, 17th July 2011 at 1:00pm at the Accra Sports Stadium.
