Ghana’s afro-pop rap music icon, Gyedu-Blay Ambolley, has declared his intention to contest the presidency of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA). The election is slated for August this year.

Gyedu-Blay Ambolley, who is popularly referred to as Ghana''s first rap artiste due to his fast-paced style of highlife that started in the 1970''s, has several albums and hits songs including ‘Onam Daadzie’ and ‘Simigwado’, to his credit.

The celebrated music icon told BEATWAVES that the current state of the music industry in Ghana needed the services of competent people to manage the industry in order to create job opportunities for the musicians and other players in the industry.

He revealed that he had held series of meetings with a number of international organizations who pledged to support the music industry in Ghana. He noted that the music industry had so many problems which needed urgent attention, adding that when elected as MUSIGA president, he would appoint personalities who had the skills and credibility to run the union.

According to him, with the support from international organizations, both musicians and stakeholders can have the peace of mind to operate.

Gyedu-Blay Ambolley pointed out that most Ghanaians did not understand copyright issues and that there was the need to educate them to enable them to appreciate the effects of piracy, and solicit their support to reduce the canker in the Ghanaian society.

He disclosed that when elected as MUSIGA president, he would institute training programmes which would be aimed at sharpening the skills and understanding of the musicians on copyright and other related rights in order to reduce piracy and help increase the contributions of intellectual property owners to the global economy.
