Electricity tariffs to go up by end of year 5/16/2010

Consumers should expect an increase in electricity tariffs by the end of the year.
That’s according to the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), which says it is committed to reviewing tariffs this year.
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) backed by the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Ghana Grid Company (GRidCo) submitted to the PURC a request for a 154-percent increase in tariffs in February.
The companies say they are yet to hear anything from the utilities regulator.
But speaking to Joy News, the Executive Secretary of the PURC, Stephen Adu, said the commission is still consulting broadly on the issue before any decision will be taken.
He gave the assurance that whatever increase is approved will be enough to provide utility providers the revenue needed to improve the country’s obsolete electricity infrastructure.
