Ghana''s Oil Is Of World Class - GNPC 10/11/2007
The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), maintains that the recent oil discovered in the Hyedua and Mahogany wells in the Deepwater Tano Block and the Offshore West Cape Three Points, respectively are of world class standard. The GNPC said Tullow Oil Plc and Kosmos Energy, the companies that made the discoveries are still at the sites working.

A statement issued in Accra by the board and management of the corporation said the Hyedua well was discovered on an entirely different geological area and should not in any way be confused with the current shallow water drilling at the North Tano Basin. It explained that the GNPC and Tullow Oil Plc entered into a petroleum agreement in 2006 for the latter to conduct an appraisal on three discoveries made in the shallow Water Tano Block. The discoveries include the North Tano Gas discovery.
The statement said discoveries were made by Philip Petroleum and Dana Petroleum between 1978 and 2000.The well that was discovered in the North Tano Gas known as the North Tano – 3x (NT-3x) was meant to appraise the entire north Tano discoveries which were made in 1978.It said Tullow Oil Plc, has been the operator of the Offshore Shallow Water Tano Block where the NT -3X well has been drilled. The statement said Philips Petroleum in 1978 drilled IN-IX exploratory well which resulted in the discovery of gas which was considered marginal and production rate not encouraging.

The NT -3X it said was therefore designed to use modern technology to test another fault block to improve upon the expected production rate. The statement said though the well was technically successful, the potential production rate was "sub commercial and hence the well has to be plugged and abandoned". It therefore emphasised that the NT-3X well does not in any way constitute part of the Hyedua well which has discovered world class oil in commercial quantities.
