Intermittent rain during the day did not deter music fans at Osu in Accra last Friday night for a cheery evening with leading folkloric group Wulomei, ace trumpeter Mac Tontoh and Simigwa King Gyedu Blay Ambolley.
The venue was packed long before the fun started. Wulomei have of late been trying to rebrand traditional music for contemporary audiences and results of the experiment were clearly evident as the mostly youthful audience danced away to the group’s rhythms.
Mac Tontoh accompanied the Wulomei for most part of the evening and threw in a couple of Osibisa tunes as well.
“The place was really cooking. I was happy with the whole affair”, he said after the show.
Ambolley spiced the night with some Simigwa groove and also had a good shot at Osibisa classic, Welcome Home. There were joyful interaction between the musicians and the audience.
Kwesi Owusu of Creative Storm, the company that put the programme together, said eh was satisfied with the turnout and the jolly atmosphere that prevailed on the night. “We’ll see about doing things like this more often, he added.
