Mayor will not hand over illegals 6/30/2007

29 June 2007

HILVERSUM – Mayor Ernst Bakker of Hilversum does not plan to hand over a list of failed asylum seekers who are not eligible for amnesty to State secretary for justice Nebahat Albayrak. He said this in an interview with the Volkskrant on Friday.

Albayrak has asked mayors to submit such a list. She wants to know who the illegal aliens are and where they are staying so that they can be deported. Bakker does not want to pass on any information because he feels that asylum seekers should be able to speak to him in confidence.

"An illegal alien that comes to the mayor to see whether he or she is eligible for amnesty must be able to speak in confidence. If in the course of the conversation it emerges that he does not satisfy the criteria, I think it is very odd that I would then have to report him and he would be deported. You just don''t do that." Bakker feels that passing on that information is a "betrayal, snitching."

Mayors are not required to submit information on illegal aliens, Albayrak said earlier this week. She does expect them to do it however. The amnesty has been in effect since 15 June.

Groningen mayor Jacques Wallage is calling on his colleagues to comply with the state secretary''s request. "There is no reason to refuse. We have been given a very generous amnesty arrangement by this state secretary and she has given the mayors an important role in implementing it."
