28 June 2007

AMSTERDAM – The number of millionaires in the Netherlands rose sharply last year, by 8.7 percent to a total of 117,400 at the end of 2006. That is more than the average increase in Europe last year of 6.4 percent, a report from Merrill Lynch and Cap Gemini revealed on Wednesday.

The Netherlands also saw more of an increase than in the previous year, when the number of millionaires increased by 5.3 percent compared to 2004.

0.7 percent of the Dutch population was a millionaire in 2006, compared to 1 percent of the population in the US, more than 2.6 percent of the population in Switzerland and 0.07 percent of the population in Brazil.

The number of extremely wealthy individuals (people with at least USD 1 million in assets excluding the value of their home or other expensive goods) increased worldwide by 8.3 percent to 9.5 million. The value of wealth possessed by these millionaires increased by 11.4 percent to USD 37.2 billion.
