Fewer street parties for Gay Pride 6/30/2007
27 June 2007

AMSTERDAM – The municipality of Amsterdam will not be issuing permits for three street parties connected with the We Are Amsterdam Pride festival, formerly known as Gay Pride. Five events will have to change their programme in order to get the required permits.

A spokesperson for city district Amsterdam-Centrum confirmed this on Wednesday after reports in De Telegraaf and Metro.

The reason for the measure is that the Amsterdam Tournament football event will be taking place the same week. Four top clubs, including Ajax and Arsenal, will be taking part and many supporters are expected to come to the city. The police have therefore advised that the street parties not be issued permits this year. Otherwise too many people will be in the centre and incidents could occur.

Two of the parties that will not be permitted would have been held in the red light district, a third was planned for the Thorbeckeplein. Eleven parties will be issued a permit – including the famous boat procession through the canals and the closing party at the Stopera.

We Are Amsterdam Pride will be held from Monday 30 July until Sunday 5 August. The boat procession takes place on Saturday 4 August. In addition to the street parties there will also be all sorts of other events including a conference, a film festival and sport competitions.
