General Mosquito ‘Bites’ NPP Chairman 5/24/2007
General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, popularly called General Mosquito, has taken a swipe at the National Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) over his recent comments against the NDC on the controversial Representation of People’s Amendment Act (ROPAA). Mr. Peter Mac Manu last Friday descended heavily on the largest opposition party, about what he saw as its hypocritical attitude as far as current discussions over a possible implementation of the ROPAA in the next General Elections in 2008, are concerned.

Speaking to Journalists in the Western Regional Capital, Takoradi, the NPP Chairman stated that he was aware that the opposition party was establishing offices in neigbouring countries as part of its preparation for a possible implementation of ROPPA in 2008. He mentioned specifically, the opposition party’s establishment of offices in Cote d’ Ivoire, Benin and Togo and stated that the NDC was preparing itself more than any other party for the ROPAA but was pretending that it was against the implementation of the Act.

In an interview at the NDC headquarters on Tuesday, General Mosquito said the comments of the NPP Chairman only smack of hypocrisy or mischief adding that, “if he is a new Chairman and doesn’t know what he is talking about, he should ask the past chairmen of his party to brief him on issues.” The NDC General Secretary said Mr. Mac Manu should be aware that the NDC started operating foreign offices long before the issue of ROPAA came up. He therefore could not understand why he should create the impression that those foreign offices were being established because of ROPAA.

“A party has to make its policies and what it stands for known to people outside Ghana for purposes of effective collaboration and understanding of issues. So it is not only Ghanaians who have to understand the philosophy of a political party,” he explained. General Mosquito asserted that, Mac Manu was very much aware that there were several political parties in the world that share the same vision with the NDC and belong to the international political group called the ‘Socialist International.’ He said in Ghana, Socialist International is represented by the NDC and added that it was purely for such collaborative purposes that the NDC has offices outside the country.

He said in the United States, the NDC has the Democrats as its partners and the NPP has the Republicans, “in UK, our partner is the Labour Party and in Germany we have the SPD as our partner, and these are facts the NPP Chairman is aware of.” “Is Mac Manu telling us that the motive for the President’s several travels outside the country is for him to crusade on ROPAA? He should not try to throw dust into our eyes,” the General Secretary stated.
