3 April 2007

AMSTERDAM – Labour PvdA minister Ella Vogelaar (Living, Neighbourhoods, and Integration) wants to sign performance contracts with all the parties involved in the measures to improve 40 problem neighbourhoods. The cabinet has plans to invest extra funds to improve the quality of life in these areas.

"The time is past for good intentions alone. You must have the courage to make commitments and to make the results quantifiable after four years," the minister said on Monday after a visit to the Kanaleneiland area in Utrecht.

Vogelaar is considering making only a part of the extra funds available in advance for instance, the rest could follow once all the agreements have been followed through on.

Utrecht areas Kanaleneiland, Ondiep, Overvecht and Zuilen Oost are all on the list of disadvantaged neighbourhoods. Vogelaar has already visited a number of problem neighbourhoods in Rotterdam. She wants to visit all 18 municipalities with neighbourhoods on the list by the end of June, and all the neighbourhoods themselves by the end of the year.

Vogelaar, talked to residents, schoolchildren, community leaders, housing corporations, municipal council members and police during her visit.
