Gospel greats to shake Accra 4/4/2007
Accra’s International Conference Centre is set to explode on Sunday night as two of the world’s greatest gospel artistes descend on Ghana to join fin celebrations 50 years of nationhood.

Don Moen and Israel Houghton have already given gospel music fans a foretaste of Sunday’s event when the duo joined thousands at the Independence Square on Friday night to sing to the Lord.

But Don Moen, is promising more after visiting Joy FM’s studios with show promoter Nana Opoku Ofori Atta, CEO of Africa Media Corps.

In a lively chat with Joy’s Super Morning Show host Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah on Thursday, Moen entreated all attending the show to come expecting worship, healing, great music and more importantly the presence of God.

“God is enthroned in the praises of his people and I know this is a nation that honours God and when we come together to give thanks and praise, God has promised to inhabit our praises. That is what we are going to do, Israel and I are going to create a platform that welcomes the presence of God and when God comes, He’ll heal, He’ll save, He’ll deliver, and encourage and provide for every need.”

Other artistes on the night, from the local front will include Josh Laryea, Moses OK, Noble Nketia, Danny Nettey, Daughters of Glorious Jesus, Naana Frimpong, Bernice Ofei, Oware Junior.

The man Don Moen

Israel Laryea of Joy FM, a professed fan of Don Moen could not resist the photo opportunity.

Moen said it has been two years since he has been waiting to honour the Africa Media Corps invitation to join Ghanaians praise God for His many blessings and even though he has a few African travel experiences, he really felt like being at home and among friends in Ghana.

Many challenges but he enjoyed them, the hand of God has shown itself strong in challenging times. Biblical saying of through Christ Jesus I can do all things who strengthens me has held true.

Felt like being at home and it was great to be home among his friends.

First time in Africa, been to Zimbabwe a few times
Two years looking forward to come to Ghana, and readily accepted to come and grateful to organizers

Looking rather young and strong, he said there was nothing as powerful as in the presence of God the many tearful outlooks he shows as he performs or even during sound check.

“You can’t control the presence of God”, you can only obey Him, he explained and said the “tears are truthful, that’s really what happens, everybody is vulnerable.”

Moen, President of Integrity Music (Comprising about 20 artistes) said he is currently engaged in his own redefinition of what gospel music should be, after churning out about 20 albums and selling between five and six million cds.

The man who says his favourite song in his impressive discography is “I just want to be where you are”, speaks rather lowly of himself, convinced that in the presence of other greats like Israel Houghton and Alvin Slaughter, he feels like a dwarf.

But apart from God, he is inspired by many to sing even though standing and performing in front of crowds is one thing he would not willingly chose.

“I love bringing hope to people. I love people and I am a normal guy with a normal voice, never intended to chase a career in Music and it chased me. And it’s like I don’t want to be in front of people singing but somehow the Lord opens doors. I love reaching people, I love being normal, I love being approachable and what I have to give I want to give and I think what God’s calling is, is to bring hope to those who are hopeless. I love doing that, letting them know that God will make a way.”
