Care benefits for 4.9 million people 3/16/2007
AMSTERDAM - The tax authority granted care benefits to more than 38 percent of the population, 4.9 million residents, in 2006. The total amount in benefits came to EUR 2.4 billion.

Recipients received an average of EUR 480; the benefits ranged from a minimum of EUR 24 to maximum EUR 1,155. The care benefit is income dependent so the lower the (household) income, the higher the benefit.

Of the total of EUR 2.4 billion granted, EUR 800 million went to recipients under the age of 65. The average joint care benefit for an average household income of EUR 26,800 came to EUR 620. One in four recipients over the age of 65 received the maximum benefit of EUR 1,155.

About 1.3 million of recipients were under the age of 30. They received EUR 370 on average. Four in five received the maximum benefit for this age bracket (EUR 403).

Four in five of the 4.9 million Dutch who received a care benefit last year were of native Dutch background. The average amount granted was EUR 480. Immigrants of western background received approximately the same amount on average.

One in ten recipients of the care benefit was of non-western background. They receive on average EUR 530.
