PM sounds optimistic note 3/1/2007
AMSTERDAM –The new government wants to develop all the talent in the Netherlands. Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende said this today in the presentation of the government policy statement in Parliament.

The prime minister said there is a great deal of strength and creativity in the Netherlands. By doing justice to everyone''s abilities, the Netherlands is capable of great things in the 21st century.

The prime minister said the country is in a good starting position. It has a solid financial basis, the social security and healthcare systems have been reformed, the economy is growing, and the number of jobs is on the rise.

The prime minister cited six pillars on which the new government policy is based: an active role in Europe, a competitive economy, sustainable environmental policy, social cohesion, security, and an effective public services sector.

Balkenende stressed that the government wanted to work out the details of its policy in consultation with social organisations. He said that the knowledge, experience and dedication of everyone involved is essential to make the ambitious plans and ideas in The Hague into a success.

The prime minister said the Netherlands'' ambitious goal of creating one of the cleanest and most efficient energy supplies in Europe was one such plan that would require work from everyone.

He said that everyone must take part in efforts towards sustainable production and consumption. "If together we do everything towards this goal, we will succeed," Balkenende said
