Almost 100,000 suicide attempts a year 3/1/2007
AMSTERDAM – More than 400,000 people in the Netherlands reach such depths of desperation each year that they consider suicide. Almost a quarter of those – 94 thousand people – goes a step further and attempts suicide. This has emerged from figures from the Trimbos institute.

The official figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS) indicate that 1,600 people actually commit suicide each year - a number that has remained stable for a long time. This figure puts the Netherlands at number fifty in the world for incidents of suicide, and somewhere in the middle when compared to the rest of Europe.

But the Trimbos institute suspects that the actual figure is much higher, since many suicides in the Netherlands are registered as traffic accidents or industrial accidents. That is why the institute undertook a survey to find out how many Dutch people really think about suicide. "We held a representative public survey by questioning people personally. The outcome can be regarded as representative," said Margreet ten Have, who drew up the report for the institute.
