Soldier honourably discharged 2/26/2007
23 February 2007

AMSTERDAM – The defence department has withdrawn the dishonourable discharge given to a former soldier from Rheden who refused to serve in Afghanistan last year.

Jethro W. has now been granted an honourable discharge, which will allow him the same entitlements as other veterans, including psychological counselling and a military disability pension, for example.

A spokesperson for the ministry said on Friday that the decision was based on a ruling from the military court in Arnhem. The court recognized that W. was suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSS) from an earlier deployment. The court had also ruled last year that W. was guilty of refusing to serve.
