AMSTERDAM —The new secretary general will specifically focus on large-scale staff reduction and development of new working methods in government agencies, State Secretary of General Affairs Wim Kuijken told Het Financieele Dagblad on Wednesday.
Kuijken called the step the “ultimate attempt” to increase efficiency in government agencies and streamline the civil service apparatus.
The fourteenth state secretary will probably work under the Minister of the Interior. The secretary will be appointed for several years.
It is the first time that the subject of government staff efficiency and steps to improve it are mentioned in the coalition accord, Kuijken said. It should therefore mark a real break-through in The Hague, he added.
Kuijken calls on all government officials to “resist old reflexes”. “It is not about the interests of your own department, it is about society. The time when you only served your own ministry, and when it was important to have as many people as possible serving under you, is over”, Kuijken said.
