KNUST qualifies for quarterfinals of University Games 6/22/2005

Kumasi, June 21, GNA - The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on Monday trounced Kano University of Technology (KUTECH) of Nigeria 4-0 in their soccer encounter at the on-going second West Africa Universities Soccer and Hockey championships at the Paa Joe Stadium in Kumasi to qualify for the quarter-final of Group ''C''.

Two early goals from Eric Frimpong and Kwame Opoku Debrah in the 10th 12th minutes as well as Frimpong''s 35th minute goal Gobah Wilson in the 45th minute secured the host university''s berth to the quarter-final stage.

In Group "A", Lagos State University (LASU) of Nigeria beat University of Ghana, Legon (UG), the defending soccer champions, 2-1 whilst Federal University of Technology (FUTO) also of Nigeria beat University of Niamey from the Republic of Niger 4-2 in their group ''B'' match.

In Group ''D'', the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) of Nigeria lost 0-1 to the University of Cape Coast (UCC). In the women''s hockey, KNUST drew 1-1 with UCC while University of Ghana beat University of Education, Winneba (UEW) 1-0 in the men''s hockey competition.Source: GNA
