Father breaks 40 bones in infant son 2/7/2007
7 February 2007

AMSTERDAM – The justice department demanded eight months in prison and compulsory psychiatric treatment for 34-year-old Ricardo B. in a court in Leeuwarden on Tuesday.

The man is accused of causing 40 broken bones to his small son in the space of one year.

A psychological study of the man revealed that the suspect is mentally handicapped and in a strongly diminished state of accountability.

“He is a danger to himself and others,” said public prosecutor Henk Mous. The child has been placed with a foster family and is doing well.

The father from the Frisian town of Burgum had reportedly abused the child from his birth on16 February 2005 until 19 May that year. The abuse did not come to light until later.

Medical experts say B. probably held the child too tightly.

They say the man’s mental handicap made him unable to care for the child. His frustration probably led to fits of temper in which the child became the victim.

The court’s decision is expected on 20 February
