| Ombudsman Checks Asylum Reports |

AMSTERDAM — National ombudsman Alex Brenninkmeijer, has launched a study into the quality of individual reports by civil servants used in asylum procedures and containing information on the asylum-seeker’s country of origin, ANP reports.
The reason for the study is the growing concern that the reports are often superficial and incomplete.
A similar study was already been carried out by the ombudsman in 1998. In 2001, an evaluation was done by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Brenninkmeijer will check on the how the reports are written, the existing requirements for quality and whether the 1998 recommendations are being followed. In his words, the reports are “a matter of life and death” for the asylum seekers in question and must be of the best quality possible.
The Immigration Advisory Committee (ACVZ) had demanded better monitoring of the reports in September last year. It should be stated more clearly where the information comes from and how it lead to conclusions and the final decision, the committee said.
The government was also advised to mention all facts, also those that contradict one another.
