‘Dramatic’ unemployment among minorities 1/31/2007
31 January 2007

AMSTERDAM – Unemployed non-Western minorities hardly profited at all from the improving economy last year.

Although the number of people in this group working increased for the first time in 5 years, the unemployment rate for this category is still 3.5 times that of native Dutch. This difference is a bit higher than it has been in past years.

Figures published by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) on Tuesday indicate that 15.5 pc of non-Western minorities were unemployed last year, the figure was 16.4 pc in 2005.

Just over one in 20 native Dutch could not find a job in 2005, the unemployment rate came to 4.3 pc in 2006.
