Ghana To Serve On Security Council 9/21/2005
Ghana To Serve On Security Council
Ghana has been selected to serve as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for a two-year term beginning January 2006, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the foreign minister, has said.

This is partly in recognition of Ghana’s growing strategic importance in international affairs and its contribution to peace and security.

Nana Akufo-Addo made this known at a luncheon organised in honour of President J. A. Kufuor and his entourage by the Ghana Mission in New York.

It is the tradition of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, represented by the Ghana Mission to the United Nations, to host Ghana’s President to a luncheon anytime he or she attends the United Nations General Assembly.

At a meeting of the African Union in Libya this year, African leaders agreed that Ghana should be one of Africa’s representatives on the Security Council because of their conviction that the country would discharge its obligations to the council creditably.
