Webo racially abused in Spain 1/23/2007
Atletico Madrid could face tough sanctions from the Spanish Football Federation after fans of the club racially abused Cameroon striker Pierre Webo.

The incident occurred during Saturday''s highly-charged league 1-0 win over Osasuna, which saw four players of the visiting team being sent off.

The match was also marred by a repetition of racist abuse at Atletico''s Vicente Calderon stadium, this time directed against Osasuna''s Webo.

Atletico have been fined for racist abuse on several occasions in recent seasons.

The Spanish Football Federation is likely to take action after approving tough laws introduced by Fifa to curb racism the in the sport.

Fifa''s tough sanctions for incidents of racism in football include match suspensions, the deduction of points, relegation or elimination from competitions.

Confederations and national associations who fail to incorporate the measures and infringements could be excluded from international football for two years.

Racism in Spanish football hit the headlines last year when Barcelona striker Samuel Eto''o tried to walk off the pitch during a league match, after being abused by Real Zaragoza fans.

The Cameroonian was persuaded to stay and complete the game and Zaragoza were fined US$10,960 by the Spanish Football Federation.

A number of other clubs including Atletico Madrid, Malaga and Getafe have been fined over the last two years after fans directed racist abuse at visiting players.
