US soap actress Conley dies at 72 1/16/2007
US actress Darlene Conley, who starred for nearly two decades in soap The Bold and The Beautiful, has died aged 72.
She earned two Daytime Emmy nominations for her role as fashion mogul Sally Spectra in the long-running show.

Conley also appeared in films The Birds and Valley of the Dolls. On TV, she starred in The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Murder, She Wrote and Cagney and Lacey.

Her publicist said she died on Sunday of stomach cancer at her Los Angeles home, surrounded by family and friends.

Eva Demirjian added that she was diagnosed with cancer about three months ago, and The Bold and the Beautiful''s producers were deciding how to portray the fate of her character.

''Constantly entertained''

Executive producer Bradley P Bell said: "She constantly entertained us with every move, every breath, every inflection of her voice. Whether she was the villain, the damsel, the sexpot or the comedienne, Darlene was brilliant."

Conley''s acting career began at 15, when she was cast in the touring production of the Broadway show The Heiress.

By the late 1970s she was a regular on daytime TV, which she called "the best medium today for women of a certain age to do something really flashy; it''s where what we do well as actresses matters".

As well as The Bold and the Beautiful, which she joined in 1988, she starred in Days of Our Lives, General Hospital, and The Young and Restless.

Divorced twice, she is survived by her son, Raymond Woodson, and sisters Carol Fontana and Sharon Wilson.
