Ghana: Aggudey Lampoons CPP Executives 1/8/2007
Bismark Bebli

THE 2004 Presidential candidate for the Convention People''s Party (CPP), Mr. George Opesika Aggudey, has taken the party executives to the cleaners, stating that delay of party''s national delegates congress to elect the presidential candidate of the party was an attempt to cripple the fortunes of the CPP in the 2008 general elections.

Attacking the leadership of lacking operational directives, he urged the rank and file of the party to take cognizance of the fact that a political party preparing to ascend to the Castle should take bold steps and pointed out the need to elect the candidate who would be marketed across the length and breath of the nation.

Speaking in an interview with this paper, he said, "The suggestion that we should go to congress in August was an attempt to derail the fortunes of the party."

According to him, even though the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which is already in power and has all the incumbency advantages, is going to congress this month and getting ready to elect their candidate.

Citing what the NPP did in 1998 by electing then candidate Mr. J. A. Kufuor and the current move of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) by electing Professor John Evans Atta Mills almost two years ahead of the general elections, Mr. Aggudey told this paper that the CPP executives must emulate other parties in the interest of the party.

"We must not continue to delay our congress. We must be able to go to congress possibly by April this year to elect our executives and the flagbearer. We must not waste time at all if we are really interested in winning power in 2008," he said.

Mr. Aggudey who single-handedly kept the CPP''s name alive with erection of multi-billion worth of billboards all over the country and continues to help in reinvigorating party structures across the nation, said he cannot comprehend the logic behind the delay.

Quizzed about resources to organize the congress, Mr. Aggudey, who is still eyeing the presidential slot and indicated that it was not going to be a titanic slug because he is winning massively, asked the national executives about the funds allocated to the CPP through the IEA.

According to him, the abysmal performance of the party over the years was due to in activities of the party leadership and called on the party members and ''sleepers'' to wake up to invigorate the party towards 2008 general elections.

Responding to why he continues to wage war for early congress, he said, "It gives the flag bearer the ample opportunity to market himself. Prof. Mills, who is already known, has been re-elected to start his campaign as early as possible. In fact it is time for the leadership of the party to come to realization that there was the need to invest in the party and must be able to recognize the efforts of those toiling for the party."

Mr. Aggudey asserted that for the party to perform very well, the party needs to elect a candidate who can identify the problems and solve them not only in the interest of the CPP but also in the interest of the nation.
