Cornmiller Jailed 13 Yrs For Defilement 1/7/2007
A 23-year-old cornmiller has been sentenced to a 13-year jail term in hard labour for defiling a nine-year old girl who had been sent to grind cassava.

Kwesi Yakanu was sentenced on his own plea of guilty to a charge of defilement when he appeared before the Asamankese Circuit Court presided over by Mr. Kofi Krodua.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Joseph Idan told the court that the victim lives with her grandmother, Abena Kabutey at Asuboi near Suhum.

He said Kwesi Yakanu has his cornmill located in the same vicinity where the victim lives with the grandmother.

According to the Prosecutor, Madam Abena Kabutey has been sending the victim to grind food items for her at Yakanu’s mill.

Chief Inspector Idan said in early December, last year, Madam Abena Kabutey, sent the victim to Yakanu’s cornmill to grind some cassava. He said after grinding the cassava, Yakanu charged the victim ¢100 which she paid.

The prosecutor, said before the victim could leave the shop, Yakanu managed to lure her into a nearby house and forcibly had sex with her. After the act, he gave her ¢5,000 and warned her not to tell anybody else she would die.

When the victim got home, her grandmother, however, detected a change in her walking and invited the victim into her room and inspected her private parts.

When questioned the victim confirmed that Yakanu had defiled her.

The victim’s grandmother reported the case to the Unit Committee members who arrested Yakanu and handed him over to the Police.
