Ghana beats South Africa 6/19/2005
Ghana’s Black Stars go on top of the group B table in the on going 2006 world cup qualifiers after they beat the South African national team, Bafana Bafana in Johannesburg.

The Black Stars won the match in two second half goals from Matthew Amoah and Michael Essien.

The win pushes Ghana on top of Group Two with two more games in hand.

Both teams played a compact game in the first half but bafana Bafana’s lead attacker Shaun Bartlett came close on two occasions watching his touch just miss the goal post by inches.

Back from recess the Black Stars were on top as they dictated the pace of the game though the South African’s were probing for the opener.

In the 58th minute, Vittese Arhmien’s Matthew Amoah got the opener for Ghana after Skipper Stephen Appiah squared the ball into his path only for him to tap in.

After the opener, the South Africans went in search of an equalizer but the closely knit Stars defence thwarted all their efforts.

The Black Stars looking composed after the first goal sealed victory through a header from Olympique Lyon’s Michael Essien.

A free kick on the stroke of full time into the Bafana Bafana goal area beat the goalkeeper and once again Stephen Appiah was at the far end to flick the ball.

Essien leaped over another Ghanaian to nod in for the second goal.

Ghana’s victory sees them going top of group B as DR Congo who are level on points with the Black Stars play Burkina Faso in Ouagadougou later this evening.
